One piece in particular: You Blow Me Away is a series Ward
did with photographer Jason Tozer. The series features
white block letters on square glass panels with the words
“You Blow Me Away” written on them and shown in
different stages of being blown apart.
It was an idea he had kicking around and when the
opportunity presented itself, he teamed up with Tozer.
“I found Jason online, he seemed the ‘go to’ man to
smash stuff easily, and he was really up for it,” said Ward.
Ward and Tozer dressed in full Beastie Boys-Intergalacticstyle
hazard suits—with masks and rubber gloves—and
started firing through 20 sheets of seven mm glass with
a slingshot.
“It was so dangerous! It was awesome, I never felt so
alive!” gushed Ward. But Ward enjoyed this piece not just
for the final results—which were amazing—but also for the
collaboration element to the work.
“I get really frustrated when I can’t realize something
myself. But then it’s a nice thing to be able to drag someone
else in like Jason or like Carl Freeman, who is this
programmer I’ve been doing some pieces with,” said
Ward “I’ve tried to do a lot of that this year, sort of work
with people from different creative backgrounds.”
On how he finds his collaborators, Ward had this to say:
“God bless the Internet! Really, God bless Google.
Google is god. Google knows everything, anybody worth
knowing,” laughs Ward. “But, I try to keep it local. Friends
of friends, people I’ve met...”
Ward has also collaborated with illustrator Pomme Chan.
He and Chan created a beautiful ambigram of the words
LOVE/HATE.
“Pomme is completely different to me, the way she
works. So it was a great experience working with her,”
noted Ward.
